Shawna Bowyer

Every year, Penn State student-athletes uphold the traditions of excellence that have stood at our institution for many years, both athletically and academically. Becoming a Nittany Lion means that you become part of that storied tradition. As an Academic Counselor, it is my privilege to assist student-athletes in developing valuable skills that will transfer from college and athletics to life and future challenges.

In addition to working individually with 5 varsity teams, I also coordinate the Career Development Program, and am actively involved in campus diversity enhancement. Outside the office, I enjoy walking, yoga, traveling, and my 2 cats – Mesha and Sammy.

Student-Athlete Career Development Handbook
This handbook was designed to help student-athletes understand and navigate the career development process so they can make informed choices after gathering self-information (values, skills, and interests), academic information, and occupational information. It serves as a resource guide to help you identify where you are in the career development process and how you can get help to continue the process.

Student-Athlete Resumé Book
Student-athletes interested in obtaining related work experience through an internship or a full-time position can submit their resumés for inclusion in the Resumé Book. The Resumé Book is sent to companies and organizations that recruit Penn State students for internships and full-time positions.

In order for resumés to be included in the Resumé Book, all interested student-athletes should submit their completed resumés to 301 MBNA Career Services Center by the second week of October each fall semester.

Penn State Alumni Student-Athlete Network
Database of alumni student-athletes available to talk with current and former student-athletes for advice and information on work in their respective profession, necessary course work, resumé and cover letter writing, job search strategies, interviewing tips, internships, and entry-level job opportunities.

Job Search Assistance
Companies/organizations will traditionally contact the MASCSA Career Development Coordinator to assist them in identifying student-athletes for internship and entry-level job opportunities.

Graduate and Professional School Advice/Preparation
The Career Development Coordinator provides advice and direction for preparing for and taking MCAT, LSAT, GRE, and GMAT exams. Assistance with completing applications and essays as well as referrals to respective offices and staff on campus is also available.
