Personal Development - A Better You

First-Year Course
Contemporary Health Issues Affecting Student-Athletes
As part of the First-Year Enrichment Program, first-year student-athletes are required to enroll in a Biobehavioral Health course that focuses on health issues affecting student-athletes. General health topics, such as healthy coping, sports nutrition, alcohol and other drug abuse, and sexuality are introduced. To impact on behavior, a model for decision making that includes facts, risks, and consequences is utilized within an experiential learning approach.

Leadership Development Course
Enhancing Leadership Among Student Advocates

The course provides students with the opportunity to practice the skills necessary for effective leadership, such as team building, goal setting, conflict management, and communication. In addition, each student participates in fifteen hours of service learning.

Student-Athlete Leadership Seminars
The Nagle CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and the Student-Athlete Advisory Board sponsor leadership seminars for student-athletes interested in learning more about becoming an effective leader. Seminar topics range from discussing strategies for handling the balancing act of being a teammate and a liaison to the coaching staff to finding your voice as a leader even if you are not a captain. Students voluntarily attend and/or coaches may nominate their student-athletes to attend, and athletic administrators, coaches, faculty, and former and current student-athletes serve as seminar presenters.

Life Skills Seminars
Depending on need, seminars and workshops are organized in collaboration with other campus organizations to educate students about critical topics of concern. Seminars on alcohol education are organized on an annual basis.
